Gerber Daisy

T he Gerbera Daisy is a member of the Daisy family/ They are in the same family as the Sunflower. Gerbera Daisy also referred to as the African Daisy, Barberton Daisy or the Transvaal Daisy. It is said that that they represent innocence, purity, and cheerfulness.
Gerberas are considered a perennial in zones 8,9,10, and 11. Although considered an annual Daylilies they will return in zones 7b unless the winter is very harsh. General they continue to bloom from spring to frost.

They are classified into four general classifications:
• Single flowers---1-2 row of flowers
• Semi-double flowers---have a row of short petals around the disk.
• Double Flowers----5-7 rows of petals
• Spider Flowers-----They have the most pointed petals.

General Daisies are commercially important as they have become the fifth most requested cut flowers for flower arrangements.
• Gerbera Daisy also contains naturally occurring Coumarin derivatives.
• They attract bees, butterflies, and birds.
• Most important they are low maintenance.
