Argiope Aurantia

(Garden Spider)


W We have all seen the huge, scary looking black and yellow spider. Usually she makes her web under the eaves of your home or in front of a window. Sometimes she will attach her web from a bush to the grass. Argiope Aurantia is a peaceful giant among the animal kingdom. (Try telling that to an arachnophobia.) They are actually an invertebrate animal and the largest order of Arachnids. They are orb weavers who build their webs at night which can be up to two feet in diameter. They are sometimes called Writing Spiders because of the heavy white stabilimenta found in one area of their web. Their web is made of pure white silk thus very hard to see except where the stabilimenta is located. You will read about three reasons why the stabilimenta is possibly important.

You will see up close how the silk is emitted from her spinnerets, a red sac under her abdomen. Along with lots of captivating color photos. Interesting facts are found throughout the book.
