obby Mottern is Director of Horticulture at Sarah P. Duke Gardens in Durham, North Carolina. He leads a team of 15 full-time horticulturists who manage the 55 acre botanic garden in the heart of the Duke University campus. Garden staff nurture a variety of display spaces including intensive annual and perennial borders, a chemical-free rose collection, an organic vegetable garden, a native plant garden, Asian species arboretum, Japanese garden, aquatic plant displays and many other horticultural features. He also oversees project management and participates in a variety of educational programming.
Bobby has a BS in Horticulture from Clemson University and a Masters in Landscape Architecture from the University of Georgia. He has performed work study programs at Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, PA and at the National School of Horticulture and Design in Angers, France.
He joined Sarah P. Duke Gardens in 2009. Prior to that he worked with Reynolds and Jewell, a landscape architecture firm in Raleigh and for ten years he oversaw horticultural operations at Brookgreen Gardens in Pawleys Island, SC.
